Greg Morrill, Director

Greg started his Barbershop career right here with the Green Mountain Chorus in 1978 making 2010 his 32nd year as a Barbershopper! He became director in 1988 and his 22 year tenure in that position makes him the longest serving director in the Green Mountain Chorus's 60 year history.

Greg is also active in High Voltage, the chapter's "electrifying" quartet. Greg has been "promoted" to baritone in the quartet (at least that's what they told him!)

Greg is a retired programmer from IBM who is now an instructor in Computer Science at St. Michael's College in Colchester. Greg lives in Stowe where he enjoys skiing in the winter and biking in the summer. He also enjoys spending time with his three grandchildren: Jessie, Jake, and Jillian.

"I got introduced to barbershop singing in college. I was part of an a cappella choir and madrigal group but wanted to try out to be in the women’s quartet. I had to wait until someone graduated before I could audition and got in on my first try. After college it took me some 20 plus years before I got involved again and this time with the Champlain Echoes (Harmony Inc. Chorus). I sang for Greg and his wife as they took us to two international championships while I was a member. When Greg and Alice retired from the Echoes I took up directing them for 6 years, sang in a quartet and was also certified as a singing judge. I took some time off but continued to quartet. I got involved in the Green Mountain Chorus in a roundabout way. High Voltage (Greg and my husband Charlie Church’s quartet) would request that I go with them when they got coached and then be at their rehearsals to make sure they kept up the work they did in their coaching session. It was decided to try the same thing with the chorus and then reinforce the good things after their big coaching sessions. It was so rewarding to see carry over from coaching sessions when they were reminded I started attending every rehearsal. I have been doing this for at least two to three years. As time went on I was given more responsibility by doing craft sessions and directing a song or two. The rest is history. Being the backup coach and assistant director for Greg and the Green Mountain Chorus is very satisfying as they have fun while working hard at this thing called barbershop."

"One day, Greg asked for volunteers to direct the chorus and everybody except me took one step backwards. While I was scratching my head trying to figure out what was happening, the chorus started singing. When I stopped scratching my head, they stopped. Greg said "you passed the test!", and the next day I saw my name in the weekly newsletter as the "Associate Director". So every once in a while I step out in front of the chorus and try to give Greg a break, and I guess he appreciates it because he's always laughing when someone else is directing. Gee, I wonder what else he has in mind for me? "
